New York, fashion capital of the world. Students from LaSalle College's International School of Fashion, Arts and Design were able to discover it during the 2020 edition of the Fashion Trips.

From February 26th to 29th, this annual trip to New York City was once again an opportunity for a 100% fashion immersion in the Big Apple.

Meetings with industry professionals, a panel of LaSalle College graduates, a conference at the WGSN trend forecasting company; the trip was very much appreciated by the participants.

Alumni living in New York City: an inspiring encounter

The organizing teachers, Lili Desrochers and Yolande Nesseth, launched the trip in style with the second edition of the annual LaSalle College alumni panel.

It brought together seven alumni, now working in New York City, for an informal discussion with our travellers (click here for the full video).

The panel was held at the Maman café, noticed by Oprah, whose owner Elisa Marshall is also a graduate of LaSalle College. Students were able to learn from their experience and ask questions to these recognized industry professionals.

"It was interesting to meet former LaSalle College students who have moved to New York to pursue their passion. It's motivating to know that moving to other countries is possible in our field," said one of the participants.

The windows of 5th Avenue

During a guided tour of the windows of the famous 5th Avenue, students were able to learn about what inspired and led to the development of the components of the windows.

The students couldn't help but take a tour of the brand new Saks store on 5th Avenue. Oops!

They also got to see some of the most inspiring designs of the century in the “In Pursuit of Fashion” exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, one of the world's largest art museums.

Industry Tours

On the second day, students immersed themselves in some of the most exciting aspects of the fashion industry. The Saks store welcomed the group to its beautiful offices for a panel discussion with some of the company's top buyers, who shared their criteria and expectations when shopping.

Afterwards, the students had the opportunity to explore the world of fashion reporting and the many influences in the industry during a visit to the renowned industry newspaper, Women's Wear Daily (WWD).

The highlight of the day, always eagerly awaited by the students, was a visit to WGSN, a world leader in trend forecasting. We can tell you first-hand that pet accessories will soon be everywhere!

"The whole trip felt like a dream. I never thought I would love New York so much or consider moving here, but now I do. This trip has changed what I see myself doing in the fashion industry," said one student.
